Abstract Expressionism
The
Abstract Expressionists
followed the earlier
Abrstract painters such
as
Wassily Kandinsky,
Alexei Jawlensky,
Ernst Kirchner
and
Paul Klee.
Alexei
von Jawlensky observed
"The artist expresses
only what he has within
himself, not what he
sees with his eyes."
Expressionists typically
splash paint rapidly,
and with force allowing
their feelings and
emotions to be
transferred directly to
paper or canvas. Kandinsky
stated "Color is the
keyboard, the eyes are
the harmonies, the soul
is the piano with many
strings. The artist is
the hand that plays,
touching one key or
another, to cause
vibrations in the soul"
