DEMONS
IN MEDIEVAL ART
The
In the medieval era and the average citizen was on the look out for
signs of demonic possession or demonic signs. If a farmers crops failed
he might accuse his neighbor of sending demons into his fields at
night. If a woman gave birth to a stillborn baby she might be accused
of consorting with demons. Even dogs and cats might be accused of
demonic possession. the penalty for consorting with demons was
generally death by fire. According to the Bible, 1 Peter 5:8 -
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring
lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." Images of demons produced during the Gothic era
were influenced by the devastating plague that
swept across Europe during the mid 1300s. Many believed demons where hiding in every nook and cranny ready and willing to wisk them away into the night sky. Demons
were often
depicted in art, literature and even songs. According to the
Bible, Luke 11:14 "And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And
it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spoke; and the
people wondered.”
"Hell
hath no limits, nor is circumscribed
In one self place, for where we are is hell,
And where hell is must we ever be.”
― Christopher Marlowe
