His paintings convey an noble reverence for nature in all its beauty. He enjoyed going out into the French countryside and sketching from nature but normally worked from memory. Having started his career as a realistic painter, during the 1890s he gravitated towards pointillism and the symbolist. He infused his art with a fresh sense of harmony and joyfulness. Some Symbolist Painters based their imagery on magical, sacred and occasionally mythological themes. Some painters combined painting with mythology, inspired by literary symbolism, exoticism and orientalism. Gustave Moreau proclaimed "I am dominated by one thing, an irresistible, burning attraction towards the abstract." Odilon Redon’s images seems to drift, even having an element of Japanese Painting.
