Sfumato

Sfumato was invented during the Italian Renaissance period. The Renaissance was the most important era in the history of Western art.  Sfumato comes from the Italian ‘sfumare’ which means “to evaporate like smoke”.   This painting technique originated with Leonardo da Vinci. The gentle transition from light to dark areas evokes a dreamy atmospheric look. The obscuring of  lines creates soft and smooth  flow between shades and colors.  Paintings looked more realistic by eliminating hard edges. The Sfumato technique used very thin layer upon layer of oil paint, applied in a sequence and done with softest of mink brushes. The sfumato paintng technique revolutionized western painting.
