Venus in Art History

From  antiquity to contemporary art, Venus has long been the favorite subject of painters.  One of the greatest masterpieces of all time 'The Birth of Venus' by Botticelli, was painted in 1484 AD.  This brilliant masterpiece now hangs in the Galleria delgi Uffizi in Florence, Italy. Botticelli created his Venus based on classic mythology and so she emerges from the sea on a seashell symbolizing being born from the sea. Another famous Venus is the prehistoric Venus of Willendorf, a primitive Mother Goddess. She was chiseled from limestone and painted with ochre. This small statuette dates from about 25,000 BC and was dug up in Willendorf, Austria.
